Re: A few unid SpE catch from Hungary

Hi Laszlo.

The OM on your 88.0 recording mentions Tunis and Gabes, so I think it's probably Radio Zitouna FM from Djebel Zaghouan.

The traditional Turkish folk music on 90.8 may be TRT Türkü.

Re: My father died this morning

Very sorry to read of this Tim. My deepest condolences to you and your mother too.

I think the poem that John posted says it all.

Tropo Spain

Euskadi Irratia in on 87.7 and 88.9, the latter being the clearest.

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Very impressive Peter. Mind you, Germans sound fine at 56 kHz bandwidth anyway due to their lower modulation. OK, as promised, here are some recordings made earlier from various stations: https://app.box.com/s/rcrppg04bih47ql2t25kfvghuus1mekb There are several recordings made at the narrowest 56 kHz...

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Thanks Peter. Although the 92.9 at 39 kHz bandwidth clip is very short I can clearly hear the typical distortion that occurs when using such ultra-narrow bandwidths. My guess is it would become even worse on a compressed rock/pop station.

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Yes but they are MP3s rather than WAVs. They are also using the DSP. I'll do a recording over the weekend using the Monitor mode in full bandwidth and upload it as a WAV.

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Do you have any recordings made using the 40 kHz bandwidth Peter? I'd be interested to hear how it sounds.

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

It would be interesting to see a comparison between your Encore and the FDM-S2. No doubt the audio quality of the Encore would blow the S2 into oblivion, but I suspect I know which receiver would win on DX capabilities. Nice that you have found a good DX machine which also provides the kind of audi...

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Yes it was from new. I was speaking to Andy on the phone about it IIRC before I decided to buy it.

I did post about it on here at the time but I suppose you missed it?:

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Hi Dave. I've had it since April 2017. All my recordings on my Box channel from May 2017 onwards were made with this receiver.

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Hi Peter. Yes it does seem to be a bit more sensitive than the XDR-F1HD, particularly at the bottom of the band. As an example, in the summer there would sometimes be an iTrip on 87.5 that would play Turkish-sounding music, that was received more-or-less fully quieting on the RBRX Encore. It was bar...

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Hi Zach. Yes this is my default tuner now. It's perfect for both DX and audiophile use.

Couldn't you just smuggle one in and then act all innocent if questioned? "I don't know what you mean. I've had it in the shack for months!"

That's funny that we both recorded Alouette at the same time. A nice long audio recording too. Good to hear Pr...

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

For Sylvestre, here is my recording of Alouette on 92.8, when it was strong enough to show the PI code of FA61:

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Wow. 1372 km is a superb distance for tropo, particularly on a dipole. Is that your furthest distance via tropo? LOL at the reaction of the locals too. "What is that geek doing with his equipment? Is he an MI6 agent?" That would be great to see your previous logs from there. It must be amazing...

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Grünten is some going there from the south coast of Ireland! This is where your logs of BR Klassik on 101.0 and Antenne Bayern on 104.4 are from. What's the distance to your QTH?

Re: Tropo 25/10/18

Hi Sylvestre.

Yes Alouette was coming in strongly here on 92.8 yesterday evening. At one point it was even giving me a PI code, despite my local BBC Radio 4 next door on 92.9.

Also nice to receive France Bleu Gironde on 101.6 with full RDS from Lesparre-Médoc after midnight.
