Re: Tuesday 17th April looks good on Hepburn

I wonder if the 5C temperatures of the North Sea will be helping this along? Remember 2013 anyone? Some of the best tropo I have known and this also followed a cold and extended winter with the North Sea temperatures being below average. Aye 08/07/2013 mega tropo to Germany when my band went from E...

Re: Somebody has got to do it! (Snow)

We had great fun in these parts. Went to work Thurs but came home lunchtime after looking at the radar. Just as well I did, as finishing at my normal time would hasve seen me taking many hours to get home - I have to use the A31 through the New Forest. That road was the lead item in Friday Morning's...

Re: How good is your loft insulation?

My loft seems to be insulated ok. Went up there Thurs afternoon and it was bloody freezing. I did get a tiny bit of snow forcing their way between some of the roof tiles in the easterly gale though. Then it melted giving the impression of a water leak. Will have to look into that. That was a mad cou...

Re: Solar Cycle 25

An update. Bit of a rambling one. If we ignore the peak in solar activity we had at the end of the summer, solar activity continues to drift slowly downward. Solar flux levels have hovered around the 68-75 range (64-66 is regarded at rock bottom, usually during an average solar minimum, the odd day ...

Re: For demanding FM DX'er ... (18 bits ADC SDR)

My Airspy HF+ arrived on Friday. Time to experiment has been somewhat limited, but have had a bit of time today. First impressions: It is certainly more sensitive than the Elad S2 barefoot, and just a touch more sensitive than the S2 and the Fringe preamp I use with it - but without the overload. Th...

Re: *** AURORA - NOW! ***

Thanks John, yes its back that must be the shortest ever interval between the afternoon & evening phase of Auroral dx ever! The "interval" is called the Harang Discontinuity and usually occurs around 2000Z. The afternoon phase continues till early evening before a fade centred on 2000Z, and then co...

High solar activity

Solar activity has taken a big and unexpected jump over the last few days. There has been no less than six M-flares in the last 24 hours or so, and the 10cm solar flux has climbed into the mid-130s, the highest such values for more than two years. The flares have resulted in coronal mass ejections, ...

Cheers John.

The post was written from the POV of an HF DX enthusiast, can understand MW types hoping for a long period of low solar activity!

Re: 2017 Es Season Off To A Hopeless Start

Well.. in the end it was a fairly decent season thanks to those 3 weeks in June that will go down in history, certainly the best season since 2013, after 2 stinkers and one a little better. May was a washout until the last few days and July was poor here up to at least the 15th. Since then I've kept...

Solar Cycle 25

With Cycle 24 now being well advanced on its downward path with solar minimum being expected in many quarters in 2019 or 2020, it is interesting that there are some optimistic signs that solar minimum may be comming sooner than we all think. IN late December last year, some tiny sunspots at a high l...

Re: Andorra received

Never had Andorra here. Perfectly possible if the skip is short enough, just need that bit of luck in being in the right place at the right time. I have had Vatican here but not logged San Marino. Should be a decent skip distance from here. Perhaps I should just watch 102.7 when Italy really gets go...

Re: 2017 Es Season Off To A Hopeless Start

well well well.. 10 days on and the season looks very different! We have had as much Es since 30 May as in the whole of 2014 put together. The aforementioned MMMoVHF graph now shows this season to be around average so far, and level with 2015 which had a pretty decent May.

yes, another working day, another opening. Yesterday, I got home from work just after 5 and caught the last minute of an opening (to Corsica) and that was that. Did record the morning opening, to the Balkans, not finished going through that yet. Hurrah for SDRs and Teamviewer. After yesterday, the r...

Re: 2017 Es Season Off To A Hopeless Start

It is clear that high solar activity can put a dampener on temerate zone Es (1989 a classic example) but activity is relatively low as we slowly decline to solar minimum. Activity at times has been virtually rock-bottom, thought has picked up a little in last 3-4 weeks.

Re: 2017 Es Season Off To A Hopeless Start

It's a really poor start, no question. Seemed to be making slow but sure progress up to the 20th, but virtually nothing since then, at a time you would expect the openings to start to ramp up. I find the MMMoVHF cumulative Es chart a very good guide - http://www.mmmonvhf.de/es/eval/all_season_progre...

Re: VAC / RDSspy issue running W10 ...

You can select VB cable, but unless it will allow you to select 192000 (I don't think it does....) it wont work with RDS Spy.
