Re: Denmark starting to appear

This interesting Julian. There's been many a time here when warm to hot sunny weather in the summer has coincided with excellent tropo conditions. In this type of setup the tropo collapses mid morning as the sun's heat stirs up the lower layers of the atmosphere but then as it cools down after dark...

Re: FM Antenna Advice

If you are considering making your own, have a look at the K6STI design compact FM5 with the driven element swept back. You will find it discussed in the aerials forum several years ago. Aluminium tube is available in different sizes from Wickes but beware the heavy anodising which makes direct elec...

Re: Denmark starting to appear

Don't know about you guys but I never get tropo during blue skies sunny weather, only when the stable anticyclonic system gives way to calm grey-sky wx. On Tuesday morning a weather forecast said there was unbroken grey sky across the British Isles and North Sea which is as good as a Dx-forecast. Un...

All reports will become outdated every few days as the Taliban are sweeping the country. radioreporter.org mentions the Taliban now using 95.0 and 105.2, and the BBC Relay on 89.2 has gone The BDXC has the only serious list of transmissions from, and to, Afghanistan on http://www.bdxc.org.uk/extmw.p...

Re: FinnHits Radio is going to broadcast during Es openings!

Lovely idea, but frustrating for those with conventional FM tuners. Maybe someone could arrange a UK pirate for dxers abroad. It would make sense not to carry music or speech, just RDS and a loud tone, say 10kHz which would come through the noise and show up on a spectrum display while not showing u...

I've just seen a report that R Farda has been heard in southern England today on 1521: could your spectrum show the jamming from Saudi Arabia?

Base FM on 87.7 this morning. Massive signal on any radio in the house so must be very local, probably nearest flats to me. Full RDS, D&B mx + shout outs

Re: Good Quality RG58

RG58U (50Ω) and RG59U (75Ω) have only ever been braid screened, the better quality with tinned copper. It was the introduction of satellite cable that saw the use of copper foil, which gives much better rejection of pick up on the cable. For MF there will be no practical difference between using 50 ...

Agreed, a complete farce. Even CR stations have become Corporate, as with Pure Radio, now Your FM with the Bertelsmann playlist
Who's left? Locally Silk FM, Revolution, and Dee 106.3

Re: Building a Yagi for FM

Good advice Dave. From practical experience and several threads on the old Skywaves group I can suggest that a small vertical Yagi will retain most of its rather modest directivity on a metal mast if mounted at the top of the mast. There is an optimum position but half way between dipole and 1st dir...
