Help with balun - K6STI 5-ele Yagi (HS Pubs)

I am about to get the K6STI 5-el from HS Publications, which has "space for an optional balun" but doesn't come with a balun. My dad emailed Garry about this and Garry recommended the idea of a homemade halfwave coaxial balun, but would it be possible to get a balun from Maplin (http://www.maplin.co...

Re: Best cheap dongle for Band 2 DXing (under £30)

Sorry for the late reply, but how much was your E4000 stick then, Sleeper, and what did it look like? I've read that some sticks on eBay that say they're E4000-based are actually R820T-based (I'd recommend reading this article from nearly 3 years ago: http://goughlui.com/2013/10/23/rtl-sdr-elonics-e...

Re: Suffolk DAB Mux is now on at last

This mux makes it a long way into Norfolk - today I got a solid signal on the car radio between Blofield and Brundall on the A47, with no break-up at all until the Brundall roundabout, with patchy reception on Norwich's Southern Bypass, and I was getting good reception on the A11 near Wymondham too ...

Re: FM tropo DX from Rose Lane Car Park, Norwich

To put this to the test, I took a 10m mast with me the next time I visited. I managed to fix it to a fence post and guy it. I compared reception with the antenna one metre above the ground and ten metres above the ground. There was no difference. So increasing the height by the same factor again wo...

An awful lot. The band would be full of Dutch and German stations, some with RDS. Even better would be an aerial on top of the City Hall clocktower! 8-)

FM tropo DX from Rose Lane Car Park, Norwich

At the top of the new Rose Lane Car Park in Norwich, the FM reception is awesome - under yesterday's weak tropo I've received Radio Veronica from Goes (96.6) and a station on 104.0 (maybe Radio 10 from Haarlem) which I've never heard before in the UK, also SLAM! from Megen (93.8), a signal on 104.7 ...

Re: Best cheap dongle for Band 2 DXing (under £30)

Cheers Dave and Sleeper, I think I'll go for the E4000 if it's the best RTL dongle for B2, unless there is a way to sort out the RDS threshold on the DTV300 (maybe the DTV330 has better RDS performance). I've heard really good reviews of the 300 from John on his blog, apparently its performance is s...

Re: Best cheap dongle for Band 2 DXing (under £30)

Cheers Dave. From what I heard, the E4000 is the best out of the two RTL dongles for B2 but the one you recommended (the R820T) is the best for everything else. As I am into B2 DXing more than any other type of DXing, the E4000 would be the most important for me but I'd be interested to know how goo...

Best cheap dongle for Band 2 DXing (under £30)

Which is the best dongle out there for Band 2 DXing under £30? I've heard very good reviews of the ClimaxDigital DTV300 (out of production) even though I've heard that its RDS threshold is set too high, so would RDS Spy rectify that? If so, I think that the DTV330 (still in production today) would b...

Re: Could this be the next "Must Have" FM DX receiver?

The radios in my parents' Fords are also very good, well, the one in the Focus is the better out of the two and it must be nearly as good as your Citroen radio, if not the same. I've been impressed by the capture radio in my Dad's Focus, i.e. the way it switched between Egem and Tac on 101.5 once re...

Re: Tropo 05/09/16

Between Quidenham and Snetterton heard Topradio Staden 105.5 on the car radio (only 100 watts!!) and I also got Qmusic from IJsselstein with RDS fighting with something in French (maybe Delta FM or France Bleu Cotentin?). Pure FM 101.1 was good too (fighting with Holme Moss) but don't remember any R...

Re: Tropo 05/09/16

Same here, John. Egem is getting quite strong here, up to 2 bars in fact. I'm even hearing Pontop Pike - I hardly ever get that one anymore even though I used to get it daily at my old house. What was amazing was that I also heard Pontop Pike on the car radio near my village. I believe I even got a ...

Re: Tropo 05/09/16

Heard France Bleu Picardie from Abbeville on the car radio in the driveway, and on the roundabout near Thetford where the A11 meets the A134, the car radio stopped at so many BBC R4 freqs: Wrotham (I think), Holme Moss, Tac (of course), Wenvoe (!!) and Peterborough. Amazing stuff!! :-)

Re: There is a lay-by......

One for Tim when he's out on his travels? You'll have to park up there when there's a good lift on. If I ever go up that way I will have 104.3 on a preset, I love to hear where that gets out. I suppose you won't hear it in London, but it covers the rest of England and SW Scotland I've heard 104.3 j...

Re: Ionoscatter

I have TWO Sony SA3ES available. They both need the tuning sorting. Those rotary encoders wear out - or they may simply need cleaning. I haven't checked. I think £30 might be reasonable for each, though I am open to offers. My 920 has the same problem; it started not long after I stopped the tuning...
