Brazilian east coast

Has anybody ever received anything from Brazil in Britain at about 20.30 hrs during Winter? I noticed on the greyline map it gets dark even before New York and much of Canada's east coast.

Re: Best receiver for MW and LW DXing?

The Sangean PR D4W is worth looking into if you want a portable MW radio for Dxing. It offers good selectivity and sensitivity for the price range. There are plenty of reviews out there but it's useless for FM.

Re: Transatlantic DX

Just picked up Caribbean Beacon faintly indoors on 1610 kHz only for a bloody Dutch pirate to suddenly come in and drown it out! I can't escape them!!

New Orleans is impressive. Which radio did you receive that on?
I haven't tried taking the D4W outside yet but will do soon.
Here is a video of reception on my Tecsun PL-398MP (7208 km).
https://youtu.be/1kXZVFggedo

I've also received it on my XHDATA D-808

Re: Transatlantic DX

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I'm afraid I'm stuck with just the internal ferrite for any dx. The D4W has AM autotracking which helps abit with weak signal reception. I'll keep persevering and see what I can get.

Transatlantic DX

I've been playing around the band at about 05.00 and 06.00 hrs and wondered what were the ever present or usually strongest transatlantic stations picked up at this time. I'm using a Sangean D4W with no external antenna and am getting frustrated with Dutch low powered station's. When I used to casua...

Re: Tropo 18/12/19

Thanks for the explanation. I didn't know about the 200khz spacing on FM. I think the Roberts Play is a Sangean 69 under the bonnet. I'm pretty sure it's the same radio but just rebaged. The 69 is amazing for portable DAB DX. The D19 is vastly superior on FM and more or less the same as the D4W on M...

Re: Tropo 18/12/19

I know you're right. I've also noticed that many U.S dxers (judging by what I have read) consider a good FM radio on its ability to receive SpE dx. My argument is that SpE dx is often strong enough to be received on any radio. I don't think many Americans dx weak signal tropo in crowded bands, there...

Re: Tropo 18/12/19

I didn't find any splatter on the 69 on 102.2 but it's not as sensitive as the D19. I'm still shocked at how bad the sensitivity on the D4W was despite Jay Allen giving it 5 out of 5 on his FM shootout. He really got that one wrong. He gave the D19 4 out 5 but it's miles ahead pulling in weak signal...

Re: Tropo 18/12/19

I'll check when I get home later although that radio is only used for DAB DX. I know it's sensitivity on FM is not as good as the XHDATA 808 despite a you tube video showing the complete opposite of my experience.

Re: Tropo 18/12/19

It was the D19. My local Heart is 102.4 and splatters down to 102.3. However in one room in my house where Linc's FM is weak Heart occasionally comes in which I assume is splatter as I can't find any transmitters near me on 102.2. The D4W arrived yesterday. It's excellent on MW so I will keep it but...

Re: Tropo 18/12/19

I don't think I'm doing as well as I thought. I had Studio Brussel in but I assume the Heart I had on 102.2 must have been from 102.4 or intermod as there was nothing else coming through from the west and Naish Hill is further away than I initially thought. It all seems to have dropped off now.

Re: Tropo 18/12/19

Conditions are a still up here despite Hepburn indicating nothing. Plenty from the Netherlands and Belgium in. I'm receiving a faint Heart FM on 102.2. I don't think it's intermod or splatter from my local 102.4 transmitter so I'm guessing there is an enhancement from the west as I can only find one...

Re: Sangean D19/D4W

Yes, I think you are right about the bandwidths being double . I doubt the 40khz filter will stop adjacent 100khz splatter either side from strong locals. I find Jay Allen's reviews to be quite useful. I bought the D19 against his advice based on You Tube videos rather than his star ratings and have...

Sangean D19/D4W

Has anybody considered or have these for MW and FM dxing? They have selectable bandwidths for both FM and MW. I have a D19 which is very sensitive and selective on FM but slightly less so on MW. I've also just ordered a D4W from the State's which has a selective bandwidth of 40KHZ on FM. It supposedl...

Re: XHDATA 808 FM reception

I was going to start a thread this morning asking about the Eton travelers FM capabilities. I think you are the first person to review this radio based on FM selectivity and sensitivity. I'll check out the link. Im considering this or the Tecsun 600 for different reasons.

How is you're new radio? I saw in another thread you are testing it out.
