Re: Geminids meteor shower imminent

It's only the most prolific meteor shower of the year with 120 per hour! Next one on the scale is the Quarantids - at the beginning of January at 100 meteors per hour.

Nothing showed up in the early hours of this morning at the top half of the band - just a few pings.

Geminids meteor shower imminent

The Geminids meteor shower should be making an appearance about now - once again it is supposed to peak in the early hours of the 14th. The Geminids make their appear from 1600 to around 1130 UTC Last year most of my reception came from the East - from 0100 - 0600 and in the early evening from 1900 ...

Re: For demanding FM DX'er ... (18 bits ADC SDR)

It is a trade off between ADC resolution and bandwidth. SDRPlay RSP1A now offers 14-bits resolution at sample rates of 6 MHz and below - which I guess would give an effective bandwidth of 5 MHz. In theory that should give an extra 12 dB dynamic range compared to the 12 bits of the Airspy/Airspy Mini...

Re: Curious Sunrise Fadeout Effect

But is the burst of noise "around sunrise" or is it that at this time of year sunrise happens to coincide with a burst of noise that occurs at a regular time during the morning? Among other noise issues on FM, in the past I've experienced severe noise which I put down to a nearby factory turning on ...

Re: Top Ten frequencies to monitor for TA reception?

Thanks John I gave it a try from 0200 - 0800 on 24th. I selected 10 frequencies to monitor on the SDR console matrix and used screen capture to take a screenshot every 30 seconds. It took about 5 minutes to playback 2 hours of screenshots. This showed at best very weak carriers on a couple of freque...

Re: RSGB react to ofcoms lies about VDSL qrm

Aarrgghh! Good thing I hardly touch HF - and definitely no incentive to invest any time/money. I don't know if the interference spreads all the way into MW - but this is what I get on HF. Broadband interference.jpg [I was only checking this out in the previous week as part of chasing down the other ...

Re: New Interference Source

It's the car!! When there is no interference I check for the car - it is not there. When it is there I have interference. But the car was away for over a day and when it came back I had a single strong signal around 89.0. Went out with the portable and it showed 67 dB about 1 m from the rear - so cu...

Top Ten frequencies to monitor for TA reception?

My aerial is probably useless for MW DXing as it is only a short dipole cut for 70 MHz fed by about 10 m of coax. However I'm playing with SDR Console v3 which allows multiple VFO's to be displayed in a matrix and I can comfortably display 10 frequencies simultaneously. Using a 2 MHz bandwidth the C...

New Interference Source

This screen shot shows the interference plaguing my reception at the bottom of the FM Band - it appeared at the beginning of November and apart from a few breaks appeared to be 24/7. (This is in addition to the solar light interference after dusk). 89MHz severe interference.jpg I was able to establi...

Re: DAB Portables Review

Does the Roberts Play actually have an external antenna jack? The picture of the rear shows something on the top right hand side marked ANT but I can't make out if the silvery metal thing is actually an aerial socket or is blanked off.

DABPlayer Install problem

Some time back I un-installed DABPlayer software from my Win 10 PC. Now when I try to re-install it I can't get it to work. The RTL stick is an R820T type. With the RTL stick plugged in: I've tried using Treiber 2 to install the correct driver - if there is an existing driver it deletes it and then ...

Re: Tropo is building up?

Nice DAB Alex. I don't have my DAB aerial available at the moment but on the vertical aerial Band II is full of Dutch and Begian stations - it a messy soup of signals with some signals stronger than my local main BBC transmitter (125 kW and only 22 km).

Re: Tropo is building up?

Where did this come from? I checked earlier in the day and the forecasts didn't look good for the South-East. Spain is virtually un-achievable here but I got lots of French stations to the south and now Germany is strong - never mind Belgian and Dutch stuff.

Re: Poland on Tropo 17 October 2017

A post I made earlier didn't 'take'. At 2346 UTC I finally got Poland PR2 on 93.8 when a German station faded - located at Koszalin. It was weak but good enough to allow the wife to confirm it matched the web stream. Both 97.3 and 107.9 are blocked frequencies. I tried listening on 107.5 which is cl...

Re: Poland on Tropo 17 October 2017

Much to my surprise I've got some nice late evening tropo - the solar light interference is less - a couple of dull days have helped. I got Garz at 2205 UTC 906 km away on 91.5 km as well as a number of stations over 650 km away.

Poland on Tropo 17 October 2017

Not received by me unfortunately - but a 'new' DXer in Rainham Kent - about 5 miles from me has logged some very nice reception in the mid evening on FMList. [He/she has been posting logs since the beginning of the SpE season] 1628 88.90 POL Radio Plus, Szczecin/Komin WISKORD (ZP) peaking at 1 bar 9...

German tropo 16 Oct 2017

Tropo to Germany has been very lively from my location for the last few hours - with ducting tending to follow the weather front and matching F5LEN's forecast. The best distance was early on at 906 km from Garz on 102.5 (NDR1 MV) with strong signals closer in peaking around 1200-1300 UTC although ev...

Denmark on 97.2 at 1630 UTC at this end of the country- weak but matched the web stream - one minute later lost under the infernal solar lighting qrn. Hopefully signals will pick up as the evening progresses.

It looks like the forecasts are going to be right - Germany now coming in quite nicely - if the forecasts are correct it should build during the night.

1 or 2 Tb USB 3.0 stick for £12 - its a scam

A friend of mine got a 2 TB memory stick very cheaply - and I've seen a number on Ebay for around £20.00. Sounds too good to be true... It is as when I goggled to find a seller I found a number of articles ringing alarm bells about a scam and on amazon scathing reviews. Basically the 'manufacturer' ...
