Re: Sept 2003 and 2004 Tropo Ducting

Loggng Oman in Kent on UHF takes some doing. I logged it in Pakistan in 2003
Some weird and wonderful gremlin (lets hope that doesn't turn into 'omlim') got in there - I could swear I typed "german"!

Maybe this year on Band 2?

Sept 2003 and 2004 Tropo Ducting

Has anyone else kept their TVDX logs from Sept 2003 and 2004. At that time my DXing was very casual. The aerial was a Triax BB flat panel and a Maxview UHF preamp standing on the loft floor. I came across a couple of handwritten A4 sheets within the page of a large atlas a little while back. From 14...

Re: Woe is me!!! The interference saga...pt x

Nnooooooo!!! The spikes have gone to be replaced by wider interference peaks at roughly 600 kHz intervals. What on earth is going on?

Woe is me!!! The interference saga...pt x

Now to make it worse - from roughly 76 - 118 MHz I have spikes every 400.000 KHz - which when expanded have sidebands at +/- 12, 24, and 36 kHz. Something else to have to track down and not resolve. I can't pin down a bearing as the rotator is currently in the shed - it has been there since the back...

DAB TII codes now in DABLIST

Our compatriots in Europe are getting very excited about being able to get TII codes from QIRX and qt-dab. Gunter Lorentz has added TII codes to the information in DABLIST (fmlist.org). The data is in decimal format - the first two digits are the Main id - the last two are the sub-id. There do not a...

Re: BBC January Closures

And BBC Kent announced MW closures before Christmas. 774 kHz and 1602 KHz are affected. Currently 774 kHz is transmitting "retune to FM or DAB or Freeview" kHz - 1602 kHz is/was very weak hre.

DAB I/Q samples needed

Could someone(s) record some I/Q samples of DAB MUXes using the qt-dab program and post a link to it/them so that we can test an algorithm for decoding the Transmitter Identification Information more extensively? A 200-250 Mb sample would be ideal. Either using an RTL dongle or SDRPlay would be fine...

Re: Big Tropo?

Tropo reception for 2017 seems to have by passed me to a large extent. I don't think I can blame it on interference either. It seems to have favoured the South Coast this year. The significant dates were 9th Apr, 28 May, 13-15 Oct, 17 Oct, 26 Oct. There was enhancement on 27 Aug and 31 Oct but only ...

Re: DAB software gives Transmitter identification Info

The other bit of useful software is Spectrum Spy if you own an Airspy - you can set it 20 MHz or 50 MHz - or wider and see all the DAB Muxes that are present. Or use SDR# for 10 MHz - it is more sensitive. Currently I'm showing 10B, 10C and 10 D - 10B is below the threshold for detection. This morni...

Re: DAB software gives Transmitter identification Info

I keep mistyping that name! Actually there is now an even newer version 1.0. alpha And with QIRX version 0.9.4 shows both the TI codes - as used by the UK, and where present - the geographic codes - which the Netherlands and Italy and some Germans stations use. To get the geographic codes you have t...

Re: Big Tropo?

I've got a signal on 10D from "Herts, Beds & Bucks" with intermittent squitty audio. The weaker London MUXes 11B and 12A are coming through with clean audio on the FM 3 ele vertical. There are also weak signals on 10B and 10C showing on the waterfall display of SDR# but not resolvable on qt-dab. So ...

Re: Geminids meteor shower imminent

The early hours of the 14th gave loads of short burst and pings - short term over 120 ZHR. But only tiny tiny percentage were worth checking for RDS as they were just not strong enough (or background interference was higher than previous years).

DAB software gives Transmitter identification Info

I never got DABPlayer working - so checked and tested some other packages. qt-tab which is an update of sdr-j supports the rtl-dongle, sdrplay, and airspy. SDRPlay is the most sensitive - I have an RSP1. If the DAB data includes geographical data - this will displayed - first in the command line ter...

Re: Geminids meteor shower imminent

It's only the most prolific meteor shower of the year with 120 per hour! Next one on the scale is the Quarantids - at the beginning of January at 100 meteors per hour.

Nothing showed up in the early hours of this morning at the top half of the band - just a few pings.

Geminids meteor shower imminent

The Geminids meteor shower should be making an appearance about now - once again it is supposed to peak in the early hours of the 14th. The Geminids make their appear from 1600 to around 1130 UTC Last year most of my reception came from the East - from 0100 - 0600 and in the early evening from 1900 ...

Re: For demanding FM DX'er ... (18 bits ADC SDR)

It is a trade off between ADC resolution and bandwidth. SDRPlay RSP1A now offers 14-bits resolution at sample rates of 6 MHz and below - which I guess would give an effective bandwidth of 5 MHz. In theory that should give an extra 12 dB dynamic range compared to the 12 bits of the Airspy/Airspy Mini...

Re: Curious Sunrise Fadeout Effect

But is the burst of noise "around sunrise" or is it that at this time of year sunrise happens to coincide with a burst of noise that occurs at a regular time during the morning? Among other noise issues on FM, in the past I've experienced severe noise which I put down to a nearby factory turning on ...

Re: Top Ten frequencies to monitor for TA reception?

Thanks John I gave it a try from 0200 - 0800 on 24th. I selected 10 frequencies to monitor on the SDR console matrix and used screen capture to take a screenshot every 30 seconds. It took about 5 minutes to playback 2 hours of screenshots. This showed at best very weak carriers on a couple of freque...

Re: RSGB react to ofcoms lies about VDSL qrm

Aarrgghh! Good thing I hardly touch HF - and definitely no incentive to invest any time/money. I don't know if the interference spreads all the way into MW - but this is what I get on HF. Broadband interference.jpg [I was only checking this out in the previous week as part of chasing down the other ...
