Re: This Evening's Orientals

Thanks John, I will copy/save that file for reference. The interference here disappeared sometime in the afternoon - in time for the evening DX (17/09/2018). My loop is disconnected but I tried the Tecsun portable. CRI on 1521 kHz was good prior to it's shut down before 2000 UTC and 2100 UTC I was g...

Sick as a parrot!

I am feeling as sick as a parrot! - as the saying goes. We went over to my daughter's new house on the Isle of Grain to baby-sit and I took my Tecsun PL380. Incidentally the tuning and volume controls are very dodgy now - almost scheduled for the skip. So I checked the MW band in the late afternoon,...

Re: Tip For DaveB

Hi John, Thanks for the tip but the band wide interference on MW was going with vengeance - with the peaks 45dB above the noise floor. At the moment it has improved to 'only' 30 dB but keeps jumping back up. So no DX last night or in the early hours of the morning. :x With the interference at the 30...

Re: Is she saying "Thailand Radio"?

Thanks for help - I was pretty sure the music ruled out Asian origin. I missed seeing the last entry in MWList for Europe was "I AM Radio" from Italy. I suppose 0.5 kw from Italy isn't too bad for reception - especially as that was the direction of the loop's null at the time.

Is she saying "Thailand Radio"?

Station id on 1350 KHz 13 Sep 2018 at 200 UTC. I can't make up my mind about this one. Listening just before 200UTC this station appears to come on air or fad from nothing. The YL announcer repeats the station id three times - the last one sounds like "Thailand radio" - the first two could be "I am ...

Re: The Solar Minimum Has Arrived!

The first thing to say is that we will not know for sure that the when the sunspot minimum is until at least six months after it has passed because of the need to average to results. The second thing is that according to charts going back a long way, the effective minimum lasts a couple of years. Th...

Re: First MW DX of the season -CRI 1521kHz

Unfortunately the noise is 24 hr long now. My best guess is it is something solar powered, though I'm not sure. When I was first testing the loop in the Spring there was no sign of it. Then when I re-installed it - it was OK Day 1 - was present on Day 2 and got worse. Wasn't there at night, but then...

Re: dx tip 10/9

Thanks David - I can see the carrier, which is stronger than ESPN 1520, but splatter from 1602 means it's impossible to hear it. And I am using LSB with <2 kHz bandwidth. ESPN 1520 is audible. I've also got snatches of Bloomberg Radio on 1130 with sufficient to identify it. On 1560 I'm getting harmo...

Re: First MW DX of the season -CRI 1521kHz

Thanks John I've set the auto recording to go on until 2110 UTC - the quality of my signal would have been a lot better if the interference was not present. This morning at 0720 Z it was turning on and off. Here is a comparison - with / without the QRN. It's showing about 9dB extra noise at the top ...

Re: First MW DX of the season -CRI 1521kHz

Actually you can skip my previous post - although I'm still interested to know what station(s) I've actually recorded. Here is 1566 KHz at 2000 UTC with the station id "H L A Z" around 37 seconds in. Preceded bymusic before the time pips and followed by more music https://app.box.com/s/x3pasi8y15omb...

Re: First MW DX of the season -CRI 1521kHz

Very interesting - I just managed to start recording at 1855UTC (I'd forgotten to enable auto time start!). This is what I've got from 1856UTC to just after the hour. https://app.box.com/s/ltoydfb8jfwgduso789gmunxswvevrd4 A few seconds in it is either HLAZ or Kate Moss then what I presume is Vahon H...

Re: First MW DX of the season -CRI 1521kHz

I managed to get ESPN 1520 around 0500Z. I've included a link to the recording for two reasons. First to ask how the strength i.e. clarity compares to what more established DXers using Flags/Beverages receive and secondly. The station clearly identifies itself as "ESPN 1520" but at 1 in 15 sec into ...

Re: First MW DX of the season -CRI 1521kHz

Dave, I don't know if you are doing any recordings or just listening live Hi Simon, I will be checking recordings for overnight TA - last night wasn't any good although I've only checked a couple of files from 43 am and 4 am our local time. Today I spent some time testing out the loop and trying to...

First MW DX of the season -CRI 1521kHz

I've just re-installed the shielded loop antenna. Now I've got to get properly to grips with MW DXing and find out where the (working) streams are. From 1945 to 2000 I got some nice clear reception from Radio China International - presuming that was the source of the Chinese music.

Re: want to laught at some idiots?

Just to spoil it with a bit of reality!

It looks just like an analogue TV signal - at the sort of strength that should give a weak audio signal. Oh - hang on a minute it is on 55.240 MHz - channel A2.

Re: Sounds like the Australian ABC News Jingle on 1548

Hi John, You haven't mentioned time or date. Many years ago when I was into ham radio and followed everything closely there was mention of UK-Australia being worked when both ends of the path are in darkness (or twilight). Not having much experience of MW or following the news - is UK-Australia some...

Re: Season review

I blame the stalled jet stream - it would be interesting to see what Jim Bacon has to say on the subject as in video by Martin Lynch & Sons last year he was discussing the correlation with Es. For me 2018 was characterised by many days with openings to the south in an arc from Tunisia to Portugal (1...
